Continuation of Pay (COP)
by L. Perez
Continuation of Pay (COP) is applicable to traumatic injuries only when one files OWCP form CA-1. In essence, COP is a substitute for compensation benefits during the first 45 calendar days of an employee’s wage loss.
Once COP begins, the 45 calendar days need not be in succession. For example, an employee who receives COP for 20 days is entitled to 25 more days of COP in the event there is a recurrence of the disability.
Example: On day two, the employee misses five days of COP and returns to work on the sixth day. On the thirtieth day, the employee (because of surgery due to the injury) needs to be off work; he or she has an additional forty calendar days of COP that could be used.
